Weird Science

Our Hero lay abed

And thought and thought and thought

There’s an answer, I can explain this

And so his ego was caught.

Well nothing lives forever

Everything lives and dies

It happens all around us

We see with our own eyes

Yes, all is born and created

From a person to a planet

But what about the Universe

Where did it come from? Damn it!

He mused, perhaps if we reverse,

And squeeze the genie back in the bottle

Do some equations and calculations

And really strain the noddle

Having persuaded himself completely

That he could argue clearly

Based on his sums and reputation

Of just one, hare brained explanation

In his reckoning, honed and keen

There  surely, can only have been

As the  source from which all sprang

A tremendous, unbelievable Big Bang!?

Colleagues cheered and raised their glasses

Students fell down at his feet

Fawning over his sagacity

Blind to his glaring conceit

Then parading his idea to college

They now teach it and call it knowledge.

Now listen he said, it was such a big bang

The universe must be expanding

What? Where is the evidence?

It’s in a notebook on my landing .

All agreed his invention, ingenious

He cuts eternity down to size

Lord him, fete him, honour him

For this font of knowledge, a Nobel prize!

A fool asked, how could he be so certain?

Where’s the evidence this  took place?

Our hero explained we cannot know

And putting on a serious face

He said such questions are irrelevant

Who could  know what came before?

Blinded by the absurd  tautology

Hubris had laid at his door.

Kudos and jealous reputations

Now have us trapped in a cul de sac

Sycophancy, the need to be in the club

Ensure there’s no way back

He had reduced to an absurdity of  nonsense

The magnificent infinity we share

Further enquiry now closed

Because he couldn’t see beyond his nose

Of what awaits us out there.

Like an elephant in the living room

The questions won’t go away

Ignore and sweep around them

But they are here to stay

He declared: I can also tell you

How and when creation will end,

All and everything will turn to dust

Err..lets see..mm..give or take,

Some time, roundabout  then.

He said,Experience informs us

Crazy theories expand until they bust

Only fools would lend them credence

But we give you science you can trust

So I must be right but don’t take fright

See,  science tells us it's so

The fool said: But science cannot tell us

Of what it clearly does not know

Nor explain the mechanisms of the universe

Forces hidden, and not on show

Quantum physics, dark matter, gravity

There’s  an unknown plethora to place

Like the assumed yet unaccounted forces

Behind the relativity we trace.

Unfolding phenomena that won’t fit,

Are  conveniently overlooked or shunned

Perhaps another Copernicus will explain

Why a preponderance of solar systems

Revolve  around two suns.

While careers, salaries and egos

Are jealously invested in misguided views

Don’t expect any searching debate

Raised by the obvious clues
