Clowns

We are so silly

We are such clowns

Setting ourselves up

To knock ourselves down

Where and when it comes

We pretend we don’t know,

Say we don’t see it coming,

As we brace for the blow.

In this brief life

We juggle our strife

Performing needless tragedies

Empty dramas we stage,

Play a farce in a  cage,

A travesty of our reality.

But if honest with ourselves

And in the truth dwell

We will examine and certainly find

We’ve been unthinking,

Crass and uncouth,

Mean, self-absorbed and unkind.

Would we acknowledge these truths

Our behaviour proves,

They would no longer sit

At our table

Where the once bitter fruits

Fought over by brutes

Be laughed at

When heard  in a fable.
